Siheyuan is a traditional type of dwelling with a courtyard surrounded by connected houses on four sides. There is a gate in the south side of the courtyard and the doors and windows of the houses are open to the courtyard. Generally, there are no windows open to the outside. Siheyuan can be found in both the north and south of China, and those in Beijing are the most representative of this style of building, and in some older parts of the city you can still find these traditional houses. Siheyuan used to be inhabited by one big family, but now they tend to be shared by several smaller families.
